Thanksgiving: a time to give back
The holiday season is upon us, and for many of us, that means turning our thoughts to giving. Whether we're donating our time, money, or resources, the holidays are a great time to remember those who are less fortunate and do what we can to make their lives a little brighter. And what better way to kick off the giving season than by taking part in Giving Tuesday?
On the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, people worldwide will come together for 24 hours of charitable giving. Launched in 2012, Giving Tuesday has become an annual tradition for many individuals and families who want to start the holiday season off on the right foot by giving back to those in need. Here are just a few of the ways you can get involved this year:
Donate your time. One of the best things about Giving Tuesday is that it's a great opportunity to donate your time and skills to a worthy cause. If you have some extra time on your hands this holiday season, consider reaching out to your local food bank or soup kitchen to see if they could use some help. Or, if you have professional skills like marketing or accounting, see if there's a small nonprofit organization in your area that could benefit from your expertise.
Donate money. Of course, donating money is always an option—and it's often one of the easiest ways to make a difference. If you're looking for a worthy cause to support this Giving Tuesday, consider donating to a local food bank or homeless shelter. Or, if you have any gently used clothes or household items that you no longer need, consider donating them to a nearby thrift store.
Donate resources. This Giving Tuesday, think beyond simply donating money or goods—and consider donating resources as well. For example, if you have winter clothes that you no longer need, donate them to a local shelter, where they'll be put to good use. Or, if you work for a company with unused office space, see if there's an opportunity to donate that space to a nonprofit organization for an event or as a temporary home base.
