The Importance of Mental Health in Fighting Homelessness (and the role of art therapy)

It's no secret that there is a strong connection between homelessness, addiction, and mental health. In order to hold down a job and afford a decent place to live, you have to be able to address issues with addiction. Sometimes overlooked is the importance of mental health in fighting addiction.

The arts can be a great way to heal the mind. That's why we will be guiding the residents of our new home in creative activities like writing and painting. We believe that by providing our residents with a supportive environment and the tools they need to lead fulfilling lives, we can make a real difference in the fight against homelessness and addiction.

The Link Between Homelessness and Addiction

There are a number of factors that can contribute to homelessness, but one of the most common is addiction. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, "People who are addicted to drugs are more likely than those who are not to experience chronic homelessness." This is because addiction can make it difficult to keep a steady job or afford housing. And without stable housing, it becomes even harder to address issues with addiction.

The Importance of Mental Health in Fighting Addiction

While treating addiction is essential to combating homelessness, it's also important to address any underlying mental health issues. This is because mental health disorders can contribute to both homelessness and addiction. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, "Approximately 1 in 25 adults in the U.S.—more than 10 million people—live with a serious mental illness."

An individual who is struggling with both a mental health disorder and addiction is said to have dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorders. according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "People with co-occurring disorders are more likely than those with only one disorder to experience chronic homelessness." This is because mental health disorders can make it difficult to manage everyday life, let alone hold down a job or afford housing.

Help from Art Therapies

Mental health is a critical part of overall health and well-being. When mental health is compromised, it can lead to addiction and homelessness. Fortunately, there are interventions that can help improve mental health, including art therapy. Art therapy provides a creative outlet for emotions and allows individuals to explore their thoughts and feelings in a safe and supportive environment.

There are many benefits to art therapy, including:

  • the reduction of stress and anxiety

  • it provides a sense of control over one's life

  • it can boost self-esteem and self-confidence

  • increased communication skills

  • improved problem-solving skills

  • it provides a safe outlet for emotions

Mental health is essential for overall well-being, and art therapy is an effective intervention for improving mental health. By providing residents with access to art therapy, we hope to help them heal their minds and fight addiction.

At HOUSE, Inc, we believe that by providing our residents with safe, sober, and affordable transient housing, as well as a variety of services that help them lead fulfilling lives, we can make a real difference in the fight against homelessness and addiction.
