The Reality of Homelessness During the Holiday Season

Every holiday season, we are bombarded with images of happy families gathered around elaborately decorated tables, exchanging gifts, and enjoying each other's company. It's a time when we are supposed to feel thankful for all that we have and come together to celebrate. But for many people, the holidays are a time of struggle and insecurity. According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, there are well over 500,000 people experiencing homelessness in the United States. And with issues such as high inflation and the drug pandemic continuing to ravage the nation, that number will only increase. This holiday season, let's remember those who are less fortunate and do what we can to help them.

The Causes of Homelessness

There are many reasons why people may find themselves homeless. Some people experience what is known as " sudden homelessness," which can be caused by things like job loss, medical emergencies, or natural disasters. Others find themselves trapped in a cycle of poverty and homelessness that is difficult to escape. According to the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University, nearly one-third of renters spent more than half of their income on rent, while just over 10 percent spent more than 70 percent. This leaves little room for unexpected expenses or tough times—and we all know that tough times don't take a holiday.

The Impact of Homelessness on Children

Of the hundreds of thousands of people experiencing homelessness, nearly one-quarter were children under the age of 18. That's well over 100,000 kids who didn't have a home to go to during the holidays. Can you imagine not having a place to call your own? Not being able to gather with your family or friends to celebrate? Children who experience homelessness often suffer from anxiety, depression, and trauma. They may have difficulty concentrating in school and forming lasting relationships. This holiday season, let's give some thought to those children who don't have a safe place to call home and do what we can to help them.
