Mother Teresa and the International Day of Charity

September 5th is the International Day of Charity, a great opportunity to learn more about the amazing work being done by charities worldwide and donate to causes close to our hearts. The day also commemorates Mother Teresa and her work in the struggle against poverty and distress.

The legacy of Mother Teresa continues to inspire millions of people to give back to their communities and make a difference in the world. In tribute to her life and work, International Day of Charity is celebrated annually as a day to promote compassion, generosity, and kindness towards others.

To say Mother Teresa helped the poor and homeless is an understatement. Mother Teresa was a woman who dedicated her life to helping the poor and homeless. She is best known for her work in Calcutta, India, where she founded the Missionaries of Charity. Mother Teresa spent her time tending to the sick and dying in the slums of Calcutta. She also opened orphanages and soup kitchens to care for the city's most vulnerable citizens. In 1979, Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of her selfless work.

Mother Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950. The organization's mission is "to care for the hungry, the naked, the sick, the lame, the blind, wherever they are." The Missionaries of Charity operate soup kitchens, hospitals, orphanages, and homes for the aged worldwide. They also provide spiritual guidance to those who seek it.

The work of the Missionaries of Charity is funded entirely by donations. Mother Teresa herself lived a simple life, owning only two saris and a pair of sandals at the time of her death. She refused offers of financial assistance from governments and private donors, preferring to rely on divine providence.

Mother Teresa died in 1997 at the age of 87. In the years since her death, her legacy has continued through the work of the Missionaries of Charity. The organization now has over 4500 sisters who work in 610 missions across 123 countries. They continue to care for society's most vulnerable people with compassion and dignity.
